A new residential area is planned on the old industrial site of the historically significant Bronzenwarenfabrik AG in Gebenstorf. The site boasts a high-quality landscape, which generates an important floodplain by the confluence of the Limmat and Aare rivers. This natural asset should be leveraged to provide scenic views for the apartments. The existing industrial complex, with its evolved structure and unified building orientation forming an overall form, also offers considerable appeal. The project proposal preserves a large portion of the existing buildings and mimics the former exterior space with a series of variously sized courtyards. This is achieved through a series of broken-angled buildings positioned in relation to each other to maximize views for as many buildings as possible. The proposal integrates naturally with the existing structures by using an angular building to complete the historical development along the Limmat and maintaining a distance from the two-storey single-family homes to the south. This approach allows the area to retain its independence while embracing the surrounding qualities without disrupting the environment. Along the works canal to the north, the buildings will be charged with public uses in order to create the backbone for a new site-spanning quarter once the northern area has been developed.
